Mitch Tuchman’s experience pioneering America’s first online investment advisory service helped him define and codify the investment needs of working Americans. But it has been his experiences as a husband and a father that have helped him truly understand those lessons. Rebalance is grounded in this understanding.

Mitch was an early adopter of retirement investment principles spearheaded by financial thought-leaders Burt Malkiel, John Bogle, and Charley Ellis. Seeing a need for low-cost, accessible retirement investment management, Mitch built a service for do-it-yourself investors to manage their own retirement portfolios. Modeled after strategies used by elite university endowments, pension funds, and foundations, that firm today helps individual investors manage more than 10,000 portfolios valued at over $4 billion. Those investors have saved over $40 million in yearly investment fees and have enjoyed less risk in the process, a testament to Mitch’s desire to help working Americans retire with more, which he brings to Rebalance.

Mitch has 25 years of experience in venture capital, public finance, and technology. He was a sub-advisor to Apex Capital, LLC, on its $200 million technology and special situations portfolio and managed its venture capital fund. Tuchman was awarded a B.S. from Boston University and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. He is a registered Investment Representative and holds a Series 65 securities license.

A frequent guest on CNBC, CNN, and Fox Business News, Mitch is regularly featured in major financial publications, including The New York Times, Barron’s, and Forbes Magazine. He also is a regular columnist for The Wall Street Journal’s investment website,

Despite his experiences and accomplishments, Mitch is firmly grounded in what is truly important. Daren, his wife of 17 years, and their three children keep him happy and busy, while his oldest son’s severe disability keeps him humble and thinking years beyond his own retirement horizon. They all keep him motivated in his tireless drive to help everyday Americans live well and retire with more.

Professor Burton G. Malkiel is the Chemical Bank Chairman’s Professor of Economics, Emeritus, and a Senior Economist at Princeton University. A prolific author and highly respected voice in the investment industry, Professor Malkiel has written hundreds of scholarly articles and opinion pieces in publications such as The Financial Times, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and has authored no less than 17 books. Among those is the investment classic, A Random Walk Down Wall Street. Now in its 10th edition, this seminal work has sold more than 1.5 million copies and has played an important role in encouraging the use of low-cost, diversified “index funds” by institutional and individual investors. These are fundamental components of the Rebalance investment platform and methodology.

A deeply knowledgeable and sought-after economist, Professor Malkiel served on the boards of several major corporations, including The Vanguard Group — where he served for more than 25 years as a key member of its Board of Directors. He also was on the boards of Prudential Insurance Company, The American Stock Exchange, and The Pew Charitable Trusts and was a member of President Gerald R. Ford’s Council of Economic Advisors.

An accomplished scholar, Professor Malkiel received his B.A. in economics, Phi Beta Kappa, from Harvard University. He has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a Ph.D. in economics and finance from Princeton University. He has long held professorships in economics at Princeton, where he was Chairman of the Economics Department. He was Dean of the Yale School of Management, and a past President of the American Finance Association and the International Atlantic Economic Association.

Despite his myriad accomplishments and professional experiences, there has been one unwavering constant in Professor Malkiel’s career: his passionate belief that the power and efficiency of low-cost, diversified, and well-balanced index-based investing should be available to all American families, regardless of income or economic status. It was this passion that led him to write A Random Walk Down Wall Street 39 years ago, and it is the same passion that makes him a part of our team today.

Charley Ellis biography at Rebalance IRA

Charley Ellis

Investment Committee Member

Charley in the Press:

  • How much does your money manager cost you? (CNN Money)
  • The End of Active Investing
  • Scott Puritz Baltimore Sun
  • NYT Cover Jan 2013
  • Index Revolution

Dr. Charles D. Ellis is the founder and former managing partner of Greenwich Associates, an international consultancy where he advised large institutional investors, foundations, and government organizations in more than 130 financial markets across the globe. He taught investment management courses at the Yale School of Management and at Harvard Business School. He sat on the Board of Directors of America’s largest fund company, The Vanguard Group, which manages over $1.7 trillion dollars in assets. In addition, Charley was a successor trustee of Yale University, where he chaired the university’s famed investment committee with David Swensen. He was awarded the Graham & Dodd Award of Excellence from the Financial Analysts Journal and is one of only twelve people recognized by the CFA Institute for lifetime contributions to the investment profession. He has served on the governing boards of both Harvard and Yale business schools, as well as New York University’s Stern School of Business and Phillips Exeter Academy.

In short, Charley is one of the most highly regarded and sought-after experts in the investment field.

Despite this, one of his most fervent beliefs regarding long-term investing is decidedly unexpected: Don’t waste your time or money trying to actively beat the market by picking and choosing stocks. Those who still do are playing a “loser’s game,” because almost no one can consistently produce higher returns over time than the market itself. He clearly expresses this in his book Winning the Loser’s Game, which has sold over 500,000 copies. In this landmark work, Ellis explains how lower costs lead to higher returns, and he champions the use of low-cost, diversified index funds over the more expensive, actively managed funds that are a staple of the major mutual fund firms.

Charley found that he was not alone in his views on investing, nor in his desire to help everyday Americans make the most of their money. He found an equally passionate voice in fellow Rebalance Investment Committee member Burt Malkiel. The two went on to co-author The Elements of Investing, a straight-talking book about investing and saving that guides individuals and families toward financial security through commonsense advice and long-term, low-cost, passive investing.

His desire to help all individuals is evident through his work with The Partners of ’63 — a pro bono organization of Harvard Business School classmates and friends that supports change-oriented educational ventures for children born into difficult circumstances. It is this desire to help, this commitment to providing everyone with the tools and knowledge necessary to achieve prosperity, which ultimately brought him to Rebalance.

Jay Vivian biography at Rebalance IRA

Jay in the Press:

Jay Vivian knows how to help people retire with more. As the former Managing Director of IBM’s Retirement Funds, he oversaw over $100 billion in IBM investment funds for more than 300,000 employees worldwide.  Analysts have praised IBM’s retirement options, often highlighting Mr. Vivian’s work as a model for money management.  In 2006, Plan Sponsor magazine named IBM “Plan Sponsor of the Year.” In 2007, Treasury & Risk magazine showcased Mr. Vivian among the “100 Most Influential People in Finance.” In 2010, Plan Sponsor gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Known in the industry as a relentless cost-cutter, his remarkable achievements are due in no small part to his dogged commitment to, and success in, lowering fees. To him, even a hundredth of a percent matters a great deal when it comes to your investments.

Further underscoring his retirement fund prowess, Mr. Vivian is on the Board of Directors and Investment Committee of ICMA-RC, which manages more than $40 billion in public sector retirement-related assets. He is the founding Chairman of the Investment Subcommittee of the Committee on Investment of Employee Benefit Assets, a $1 trillion fund trade group. Mr. Vivian is also on the Investment & Pension Subcommittee for the charity United Way Worldwide, and recently has been named to the Board of Directors of AIMCo, the $75 billion provincial pension fund for Alberta public employees.

Vivian has been quoted as an expert in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Plan Sponsor, MSN Money, Asset International Chief Investment Officer, Pensions & Investments, and Institutional Investor. He holds an A.B. in mathematics from Bowdoin College, an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and a CFA® Charter from the CFA Institute.

Given his wealth of knowledge and experience managing retirement assets, his skill in fine-tuning asset allocations, and his remarkable ability to reduce fees, it comes as no surprise that Jay is a member of our Investment Committee at Rebalance. After all, we would be hard-pressed to name anyone else with more insight and expertise in helping people retire with more.
